Waconda Heritage Association took interest in historic Hopewell Church in 1991 when the building was slated for demolition. Now sitting, just a half-mile north of the shores of Waconda Lake, and within the bounds of Glen Elder State Park, Hopewell stands revived.
The church, moved 15 miles to its present location in 1994 from it's original location southwest Beloit, represents the first stage of the Waconda Heritage Village Association's goal of creating a "living" site dedicated to pioneer heritage and Native American lore. The names "Leslie" and "Hopewell" are the thread that holds the story together as the scene shifts to Illinois. Samuel and Harriet Leslie left the Hopewell church in Ohio to make their home in Henderson County, Illinois. |
