2013 GE Community Club Scholarships Awarded

Two Glen Elder students have been awarded $300 scholarships by the Glen Elder Community Club.

Kendra Jermark, daughter of Steve and Lisa Jermark, was awarded one of the scholarships. She plans to attend Fort Hays State University for pre-nursing toward her Bachelor of Science in nursing.

Katy Winkel, daughter of Alan and Deanne Winkel, was awarded the other scholarship. She plans to attend the University of Kansas and pursue her Doctor of Pharmacy degree. The Glen Elder Community.

The GE Community Club scholarship was originally established in 1999 through the efforts of the community's special history book committee and the subsequent sale of the Glen Elder Family History Book.  Memorial donations were also received in honor of Charlie Parker, Gail Weidenhaft, and Lyle McPeak, all long-time residents who were much respected in the community.  Various other local contributions also support the scholarship.

The scholarships are awarded annually to high school seniors with a Glen Elder address with plans to continue their education beyond high school

Congratulations!

April 15, 2013

The Glen Elder Community Club met April 15, 2013 at Glen Elder Haven meeting room @ 5:30. Linda Riley, Vice President, called the meeting to order.  Members present:  Linda Riley, Denise Jackson, Cindy Clausen, Glenda Shoemaker, Janelle Beatz, and Sheila Paxson.  Minutes from the March meeting were read, corrected and approved.  Denise Jackson gave the Treasurer’s report.  The checking account balance is $4,598.64 and report was accepted.

Old Business:  Easter Egg Hunt – Discussion was held on the recent Easter Egg Hunt.  Comments included that not all business received eggs to be filled.  Chocolate candy in the eggs was a problem again along with loose candy.  The American Legion and Auxiliary would like only 25 eggs each in the future.  It was suggested we cut back on eggs and change the times to the same as area towns but was decided as long as we had eggs and donations, to keep it in the afternoon at 2:00.  Everyone decided that the setup was good and everyone had plenty of eggs.  Another suggestion was to put on the membership letter that Easter Egg filling and helping hide the eggs should be on the sheet.  Drew Cunningham played the Easter Bunny again and did an excellent job.

Memberships are up from the prior year.  Discussion was held on possibly calling the persons that letters were sent to that have not yet responded to see if they would like to join.

Scholarship winners were announced:  Kendra Jermark and Katy Winkel.  Announcement will be sent to the newspapers and sent to Greg German to display on the website.  Discussion was held on how much to emphasis to place on when the applications are due and if all pieces are due at the deadline.  Scholarship committee may discuss this in the future.

June 1st will be the Citywide Garage Sale.  Cindy Clausen will head the committee and asking for information by May 17th so maps and flyers can be made.  Advertising will be in classified ads in newspapers, local channel on TV, KDNS Community calendar etc.

Discussion was held on the Glen Elder Fun Day.  Earlier in the year, discussion was held to hold the games in the evening.  Possible games include Dime Toss, Bean Bag Throw, and one Ball Throw.  Stuffed animals and glassware will be needed.  Denise Jackson offered to have Cunningham Telephone be the drop-off for the stuffed animals/glassware.  Hedge is needed for the pit for the pork – if anyone has any contact Ted Eberle.

A  Summer Swim will be scheduled after the pool opens.

Next meeting will be May 20, 2013

Old Business:  Easter Egg Hunt - Will need more volunteers to hide eggs the day of Easter Egg Hunt starting around 11:45.    Groups will be 0-2 & 3-4 @ north of Wayne’s and other groups will be in park – marked off in three sections 5-6; 7-8; and 9-11.  The Easter Bunny will have extra eggs for those kids who show up late or didn’t get any.  The Easter Egg Hunt will begin at 2:00 with staggered starts.  Jessi will ask City crew to have the train for rides. It was mentioned that at least one adult should be on rides with kids.  Also need to have someone help line up kids so everyone gets turn for rides.

Scholarship letters have gone out and as of the date of the meeting, no applications have been received.  They are due by April 1st.

The Lions Club would like the Community Club to share costs if they get the Screening bus.  Denise moved to pay half ($100) and they will look into available dates.  The Lions Club no longer wishes to be in charge of the Fun Day Entertainment.  Sandy McBlair has said she would like to MC the event for the Community Club.

American Legion has said they would sponsor Bingo on Fun Day and have ice tea, water for sale and Auxiliary would have pieces of pie for sale.

June 1st will be the Citywide Garage Sale and the MC Relay for Life begins that evening.  Discussion was held on whether to change date of garage sale but decided the two would not conflict with each other.
