She presented a recap of last years’ revenues and expenses and showed a net income of $1,074.40. Linda moved to accept treasurer’s report and Sheila seconded. Motion carried.
A new Boy Scout Troop is being formed for the Glen Elder, Cawker, and Downs towns. Cassi Walsh asked for a donation with start-up costs. Discussion was held on what costs the Scouts might have for the start-up such as Scout manuals and national dues. Linda moved to donate $50 to the Boys Scouts and was seconded by Denise. Motion carried.
After discussing ways on how to inform the community and others of what the Community Club does, it was suggested to have a photographer at the events. Jessie Cunningham spoke to Tracy Anderes about taking pictures at Community Club events. She said she would if she was in town that day. It was also suggested that Tracy and Alice Thompson could work together on the GE Community Club Facebook page. Discussion was also held on how to make sure items were sent to Greg German to have them put on the Glen Elder Website.
Linda Riley presented a copy of the Glen Elder Community Club Scholarship requirements and instructions. Several items discussed for change was trying to get the student more involved in the Glen Elder Community Club activities during their school years. It would be preferred if the recipient could be present the day of Fun Day to receive the scholarship but if unable to be there that day, to help with advance work for Fun Day. Another change suggested was hand delivering the application to Linda Riley or Cunningham Telephone office due to the fact last year, one of the students mailed their application and it was not received. Another suggestion was to send the application by certified mail. Scoring for the scholarship was changed some also. Final changes will be voted on at the February meeting. Discussion was also held on increasing the amount from $250 to $300 for two recipients. Denise moved to change amount from $250 to $300 was seconded and motion carried.
The next meeting will be held February 20, 2012 at Glen Haven @ 5:30.
Membership letters were then readied for mailing this week.

December 19, 2011
The Glen Elder Community Club met December 19, 2011 at Glen Elder Haven meeting room @ 5:30. Present was Jessie Cunningham, Denise Jackson, Linda Riley, Cindy Clausen, Glenda Shoemaker, Sandy McBlair, Kent Anderson, Alice Thompson, Judy Swickard, Candi Kusler, Kevin Noller and Sheila Paxson. President Jessie Cunningham called the meeting to order. Minutes from the November meeting were read and approved as corrected. Denise Jackson gave the Treasurer’s report. The checking account balance is $3,279.10. Linda Riley presented $22.00 in cash from coffee can at Wayne’s for scholarship fund and presented a bill for $31.05 for Welcome Packets and meat & cheese tray.
Kent Anderson gave a short presentation on Clarence Pickett, who was raised in the Glen Elder area. He was secretary of the American Friends Service Committee when the organization received the Noble Peace Price in 1947. Kent would like to have a Peace Pole erected in the Square next to the miniature Friends Church in honor of Clarence Pickett. The pole would contain the message “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in eight different languages. He would like to have a dedication at the Glen Elder Fun Day if he receives permission from the City Council to place the pole in the park. More information will be coming in the future.
Discussion was held on the Christmas Lighting held Saturday November 26, 2011 at the Square. There were approximately 76 persons who attended. Since Santa was inside the library, hot chocolate was not in high demand. Left-over cookies were given to the local businesses that helped with Community Club projects during the year. The Christmas drawing prizes were purchased at Wayne’s Sporting Goods with Wayne donating ½ of the cost for them. A suggestion for next year is to either ask the local businesses to donate prizes or purchase prizes from more than one local vendor. Another suggestion was to have hams or turkeys as prizes. Someone else suggested having a Tour of Homes next year as a fund raiser during the Holiday Season.
Under New Business, discussion was held on determining a date for Fun Day. Pros and cons were discussed for moving the Fun Day to earlier in the summer such as early June. One of the main reasons for moving the date was because of the heat but it was decided that early June could be just as hot as July as well as conflict with local farmers drilling milo and readying equipment for the wheat harvest. Keeping the date in July on the same weekend would develop consistency in when the event is held – if we switch weekends every year we could lose the crowd that comes now. Memorial Day and Labor Day was also mentioned but decided it would be hard to get people to help at those times. Another one suggested to try to come up with alternatives to “beat the heat” in July with maybe tents, misting system etc. A paper ballot was taken with the results being 10 - keep the same; 1 - June 9; and 1 - June 2 so the decision was made to keep it on the 3rd Saturday of July – July 21, 2012. Committees will be set up in January to come up with some alternatives activities for the coming Fun Day.
Membership letter was discussed. Dues will be left at $10 - individual; $15 – Family; and Business - $25. Jessie Cunningham will get the letter ready and the members will seal and get them ready to mail at the January meeting.
Elections of officers took place with all officers retaining their positions for one more year. Jessie Cunningham – President; Cal Swickard – Vice President; Denise Jackson – Treasurer; Sheila Paxson – Secretary.
Sheila Paxson suggested the Club give a donation to the “Helping Hands” fund as we have done in the past. Linda Riley moved and was seconded to give the same amount as last year. Denise will check in her records to see what that was. Linda Riley will bring revisions for the Scholarship requirements to the next meeting.
The next meeting will be held January 17, 2012 @ 5:30.

August 29, 2011 Special Meeting
The Glen Elder Community Club held a special meeting August 29, 2011@ 5:30 in the Glen Haven meeting room to determine if there was enough interest to sponsor the Glen Elder Annual Chili Cook-off as the organizers from prior years had other obligations this year. Those present volunteering to do things for the Chili Cook-off are:

OLD BUSINESS: Linda Riley gave an update on the Recycling center. The City of Glen Elder has donated a building and will get it ready by the end of September. The center would be able to take #1 & # 2 plastics; tin, newspapers; and magazines. There will be a flyer in the September City bills explaining about the Recycling center. She will be seeking volunteers to help with various aspects of it.
Discussion was held on Fun Day. A few suggestions were to poll on when to have Fun Day when the membership letters are sent out; to have it at the same time each year; to have it either spring or fall as July is too hot a month; combine with Chili Cook-off. Raffle table should have two people manning it. Raffle items should be displayed and advance sales should be taken on them a few weeks ahead of time. Events should be moved closer together – maybe do away with parade. Community Church service was good and should be continued. Glow Necklaces sold well but bracelets not so much.
NEW BUSINESS: Halloween Haunted House – Jennifer Kresin will be in charge of it again and is looking for a new location to hold it this year. It will be on Saturday October 29th. Discussion was held on whether to hold Trunk & Treat the same evening.

Discussion was held on how to encourage more people to pay dues to join Glen Elder Community Club. It was suggested to put an ad on the local channel, leave addressed envelopes/membership letters at City Hall and Cunningham's. 8-1/2” by 11” signs will be sent to those businesses showing their membership for 2011.
Discussion was held on the scholarship checking account as the money is getting low. The cd that was thought to be coming due shortly is not due for a while. Denise will check on seeing what type of penalty will be to redeem early and then transfer some funds over to the Scholarship fund and put the rest back into a cd. Other discussion on the Scholarship monies included on how to solicit more funds for it so bigger scholarships could be given. Brochures could be made up and left at Funeral Homes for Memorials to Scholarship Fund, notation on the Glen Elder website, Donation Bucket at Glen Elder Fun Day to help sponsor scholarships etc. It was decided to try to have a Raffle during Fun Day for the purpose of raising the scholarship fund. Jessie Cunningham will get prizes for the Raffle. Donation buckets may be put in at Wayne’s and at the bank for the scholarship fund. Denise also brought the donor plaques as they have not been updated for several years. After some discussion it was decided to place the donor plaques in the poster display in the Square Park. Linda Riley will get the engraving done for those donors in the last several years. Scholarships will be given during the program at Fun Day.
Old Business: Easter Egg Hunt – Turnout was good for the Easter Egg Hunt and everyone got lots of eggs. Cal reported he had a comment that this was the best Easter Egg Hunt in the past five years. Cindy Clausen said egg halves could be taken to the school and the school kids would help put the right colors together.
Recycling: Linda Riley went to the City Council for a possible location and will get quotes from Perry Copeland for building.
New Business: Fun Day - Jessie Cunningham reported she still had not received a contract from the band but assumed they were keeping the date. The Parade will start at 5:30 with the meal immediately following. Possibly try to find a different route for the parade instead of going into the sun. Games & Prizes – Lions Club is sponsoring the Jumper and will get the Football & Basketball Throw for the Community Club to man. Some prizes will be ordered and will also take donations clean stuff animal and other small toys in good condition. Advertising – will ask Megan Duskie to help make the flyer as she has in the past. Denise will talk to chairman of WaKonda Celebration about sharing advertising in the newspapers. Possibly put a large sign by Lakeside Convenience during the day for Fun Day. Lions will make flyers for the Fun Run and Breakfast. Jessie will talk to pool managers about sponsoring a free swim from 1-3 that afternoon. A community church service will be held at 11:00 in the Park. Scenic Roots (Bluegrass) Erin & Amber Rodgers will put on a short program. A free will offering will be held to help defray the expenses. Also present were Glenda Shoemaker, Cindy Clausen, Denise Jackson, Linda Riley, Cal Swickard, Alice Thompson, Sandy McBlair, Dawn Tietjens, and Sheila Paxson.
Minutes were read from the February meeting. After corrections were made, Cal Swickard moved to accept the minutes and it was seconded. Treasurer’s report was given by Denise Jackson with a balance of $2,308.17 in checking. She has received $605 in 2011 memberships for the year so far with another $75 in memberships at the meeting.
Linda Riley presented a bill for $13.54 – supplies for meeting sign reminders to put around town and $1.76 for postage for scholarship letter sent to Lakeside, St. Johns; Beloit High, and Tipton schools. Seniors with a Glen Elder address are eligible for one of two $250 scholarships. Linda will contact those persons who served on the Scholarship Committee in the past to see if they would like to help again this year.
Discussion was held on the Easter Egg Hunt to be held April 23, 2011 at the Square Park. Drew Cunningham will be the Easter Bunny this year and club will pay him $20.00. It was decided the younger groups could use more eggs this year so local business will be asked to fill/donate 50 eggs instead of the two dozen as in the past. The older age group will move to the Zoo Park, the youngest set to the lots between Wayne’s & the Senior Center, and the rest in the Square Park. The Community Club has purchased 132 prefilled eggs, received a donation of 500 prefilled eggs, another 100 eggs from Jessie’s mother’s group in Lyons, Mom’s in Touch, and 25 eggs from the Senior Center. The goal is to have around 1900 eggs for the hunt. Additional eggs will be filled at the April meeting.
Fun Day – Changing the date was discussed as the weekend of July 16th is at the same weekend as the 1st Annual Wakonda Springs Indian Festival at Waconda Lake. It is tentatively left as the same weekend pending on what the band “Wanted” has booked for the weekends in July. Jessie was going to ask Jennifer Kresin to check on this. Discussion was held on when to start activities with Fun Run in the morning; Poker Run @ 9:00 am; free swimming from 1-4, games for children from 4-5:30; parade at 5:30 with the BBQ following. Entertainment would be during the meal with the dance at 8:30/9:00. Committee heads for the day – Lions Club – Fun Run and Entertainment; Poker Run – Denise Jackson; BBQ – Jessie Cunningham/ Megan Duskie; Games – Glenda Shoemaker; Parade – Sheila Paxson; Band – Jennifer Kresin. More discussion on the Fun Day will be held at the next meeting.
Linda Riley brought up the idea of having a “Recycling Trailer” in town. She is looking at grants to help with the cost of recycling and asked if the Community Club may be interested in sponsoring such a project. Denise Jackson had someone ask whether the Community Club would sponsor a City-Wide Cleanup. The club will look into what it takes to do such a project. Next meeting will be April 18, 2011 at 5:30 p.m. at the Glen Haven Community room
